For many children in Kenya’s urban centers, the street is not a choice but a consequence of poverty, family breakdown, neglect, and abuse. Life on the streets exposes children to hunger, violence, exploitation, and uncertainty, often stripping them of safety, dignity, and hope.
Undugu Society of Kenya was founded on the belief that no child belongs on the streets. Since 1973, the organization has walked alongside vulnerable and street-connected children, offering care, protection, and a pathway to a better future.
The journey often begins through street outreach. Trained social workers engage children where they are, building trust and understanding their individual stories. With patience and compassion, children are supported to leave the streets and enter a safe environment where healing can begin.
Once in the program, children receive shelter, nutritious meals, medical care, and psychosocial support. These essentials provide stability and allow children to recover from the trauma and hardships they have endured. Rehabilitation is a gradual process, designed to restore confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging.
Education plays a central role in transformation. Children are supported to return to school or enroll in vocational training depending on their age and ability. Through education and skills development, young people gain tools that prepare them for independence and meaningful livelihoods.
Undugu also recognizes that lasting change goes beyond the child. Family tracing, mediation, and community support are critical to ensuring safe and sustainable reintegration. By addressing the root causes that push children to the streets, families are strengthened and children are given the opportunity to grow within supportive environments.
Many former beneficiaries of Undugu Society of Kenya have gone on to become self-reliant adults, supporting themselves and their families while contributing positively to their communities. Their journeys stand as powerful reminders that with care, opportunity, and guidance, every child has the potential to overcome difficult beginnings.
